Healthy Aging & Feldenkrais® Method

People often find it hard to remain physically active as they age. It often feels like a vicious circle:  Balance and coordination get worse, increasing a risk of injury even from mild physical activity, but avoiding physical activity also has a negative effect on overall health and wellbeing.

The Feldenkrais® Method, developed by Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais, is a gentle, non-invasive approach to pain relief that focuses on improving movement and increasing self-awareness. This method is based on the idea that by learning to move more efficiently, we can reduce pain and improve overall physical function.

In addition to physical improvements, Feldenkrais® method helps reduce stress and anxiety, and improves self-regulation.

Unique advantage of the Feldenkrais® method is that it does not require strenuous exercise in order to help improve quality of life, which makes a crucial difference for older adults, who often find it hard to do everyday activities let alone exercise which carries with it a higher risk of injury. Feldenkrais® sessions can help restore a person's ability to move with ease, which in turn will make physical activities (including exercise) accessible and enjoyable.

By working with the nervous system to help develop better movement habits, the Feldenkrais® method offers a wide range of benefits to support healthy aging.  Feldenkrais® sessions can help older adults improve balance and coordination, alleviate pain, prevent falls and other injuries, speed up injury recovery, and make many everyday activities easier and more enjoyable.

Personal Story Examples

Many older adults I’ve worked with were able to improve how they feel on a daily basis – reducing pain, improving balance and coordination, and making it possible for them to become more physically active. In addition to physical benefits, they appreciate feeling better emotionally. They describe it as feeling more at ease, at peace, quieter, calmer.
